THE 'UNEXPECTED RED THEORY': WILL YOU BE EMBRACING THE VIRAL TREND?

Updated: Mar 8

Here we go again... as soon as one TikTok trend fades, another is ushered through the door and this one is definitely making an entrance!

It appears there is yet another social media fixation that's gaining traction across home design and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it yet. I don't think you should ever embrace a trend for the sake of it but it's fun to see the ideas being thrown around so let's delve deeper into the 'unexpected red theory' shall we?

TikToker and US-based interior designer, Taylor Simon, coined the term 'unexpected red theory' and defines it as “adding anything that’s red, big or small, to a room where it seemingly doesn't match”. According to Taylor, once a red piece has been added to a room, it automatically looks better. It can be as simple as a red lamp or soft furnishing, a painted door or a completely random red cupboard that stands boldly in an otherwise neutral kitchen.

And it would appear that a lot of interior design experts are tending to agree with her...

At first glance, I have to say I wasn't entirely sold. When you look at some of Taylor's examples, I can see the idea behind it - it's about taking something slightly mundane and giving it a surprise splash of red, working with contrasting yet complimentary colours but like any fashion or interiors design style, it won't necessarily suit everyone's home or indeed, personal taste.

The shade of red is key; it's not just about vibrant tomato red tones, deeper variations of red - think rust, burgundy and claret - can be less jarring, creating a more timeless and cosy look and this is where the trend grabs my attention. That's not to say I'm immediately going to splash accents of muddy red around our home but I now understand how well it can work.

Proving just how swoon-worthy a dose of unexpected muted red can be is interior design studio, Alice Grace Interiors.

According to Alice Gaskell, founder of Alice Grace Interiors, the key to to incorporating red into your colour schemes is to first establish a solid neutral palette as a base. This doesn't mean choosing just one hue, but rather layering colours that complement each other, each adding depth and dimension to your home.

Alice says, "By embracing deep and warm tones of red, you can achieve a colour scheme that feels timeless, lasting far beyond its current trending status."

So, what do you think? In theory, it's a trend that really shouldn't work, but when done right it can seriously pack a punch so will you be embracing the 'unexpected red theory' in your own home? I'd love to hear your thoughts...
