KID'S DECOR

Updated: Sep 28, 2023

Designing a nursery or children's bedroom can be a minefield - parents are often lured into incorporating the latest cartoon character obsession, sports team or colour fad but if you're anything like me, you'll be torn between giving your little darling the Spiderman themed haven of their dreams and maintaining an aesthetic that doesn't induce a migraine every time you kiss them goodnight.

Having said that, kid's interior design should absolutely be about creating a fun and imaginative space for children to play, learn and grow. A child's bedroom should inspire and also serve as a place for relaxation but the trick is to design a timeless space that won't be considered 'old news' by your youngster before you've even added the finishing touches.

By day, I am a kid's décor designer and even have my own business, Harlow & Beau, so whilst I don't have little ones these days, I do have an eye for all things cute and childlike. I've been running the business for a few years now and have noticed a definite shift towards more neutral décor for children. That's not to say it's becoming any less fun or characterful - woodland creatures, rainbows and safari animals are all hugely popular - but the colour palettes are becoming a little more muted.

While it's obviously important to keep room design both practical and full of character for children, you can certainly lean towards other areas of your home and pull common elements into the space thereby creating harmony between young tastes and your overall aesthetic and striking a balance between playful and timeless. This might include colour palettes, textures or materials... simply pick a design 'thread' and build on it, that way your child's bedroom will be in tune with the rest of the house.

Fabrics and patterns such as stripes, checks and stars are classics for kids that bring an element of fun whilst also standing the test of time. Think about using these staples for furnishings that last and perhaps introduce more playful elements or 'themes' with décor that can easily be swapped out and replaced as your little one grows older and develops their tastes. Cushions, curtains, bedlinen, rugs, lampshades can all be updated easily while keeping the fundamental essence of the room in harmony with the rest of your home.

Artwork is also a great way to bring character into a child's bedroom, Studio Yaya and Pretty in Print are two of my favourite small businesses offering adorable prints for kids.
