As the leaves begin to fall and the days grow shorter, it's time to bid farewell to the (blink and you'll miss them) sunny days of summer and instead welcome the crisp air, chunky knit sweaters and cosy nights of autumn.
With the shift in season comes the perfect opportunity to switch up your décor. I'm not talking a major overhaul - unless that's your thing - instead, a few simple tweaks can help create a cuddled up atmosphere perfect for the cooler months ahead. These changes don't need to be particularly time consuming or expensive so let me share five ways to transition your home for autumn which I'll be adopting in our home...

Simple right? Autumn décor is all about feeling warm and cosy, and there’s no easier way to introduce this into your home than with multiple layers and tactile textures. Layering is a brilliant styling device - think woven cushions, woollen blankets, plush quilts, faux fur rugs - anything that warms up a space. I personally love a faux sheepskin draped over a chair, it immediately creates an inviting retreat, somewhere to curl up with a good book and a hazelnut latte.

It's not rocket science, there’s no doubt that the natural colours of autumn evoke feelings of comfort and cosiness. The usual suspects - deep reds, burnt oranges, rich browns and warm ochres - inevitably make us think of fallen leaves, pumpkins, gingerbread and fiery autumn sunsets but if you're a neutral lover, like me, simply swapping out cooler shades for warmer tones of your existing scheme will help your home feel more season specific.

Personally, scented candles are something I love all-year round but, in autumn, the lighting of a candle becomes a ritual that I really enjoy. Scent can be a game changer when it comes to evoking the feeling of autumn in your home however, I'm not suggesting you burn pumpkin spice candles from dawn 'til dusk. If that's your bag then go for it but there are plenty of other warming fragrances that go hand in hand with this time of year.
Some of my favourites are ginger, cedarwood, pomegranate, amber and oak... I'm a sucker for anything that has that expensive men's cologne vibe. One that I love and that gives me all the autumnal feels is Amber from The White Company which contains warming notes of amber, layered with aromatic ginger and earthy cedar. Another is Noir, again from The White Company, which is a really musky comforting scent to accompany those longer evenings.

At this time of year, the sun sets earlier and earlier and the evenings become a canvas for cosy moments. As a result, lighting takes centre stage but we all know that the 'big light' is not conducive with a warm and inviting atmosphere. I don't know about you but the big lights in our house may as well be purely decorative because they are NEVER switched on! Instead, try layering different types of soft lighting such as table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and even candle light to add an autumnal warmth and depth to a space.

Flowers and foliage are an easy way to bring the colours and textures of the season into your home. If you can gather from your own garden then lucky you - if not, why not pop your wellies on and go foraging (obviously check it's not private land before you go snaffling twigs and branches!).
And, if you don't fancy bringing the literal outdoors in, there are some fabulous faux botanicals to choose from instead. The Suffolk Nest and Abigail Ahern are my go-to brands for all things faux. Both have a wide range of faux and dried stems influenced by the beautiful British countryside which enable you to curate your own arrangement to suit your home.

So, there you have it... a few ways to transition your home décor for the season ahead. Whether you're an avid autumn enthusiast or someone looking to add a touch of seasonal charm to your space, these ideas will hopefully give you some inspiration for your own home.
I'd love to hear what your seasonal décor plans are (if any)... do let me know in the comments.
