AUTUMN WINTER 24: HOME DECOR TRENDS

Ah, autumn... the season of cosy jumpers, pumpkin spice everything (yuk!) and the annual dilemma of how many throws is too many - there's no such thing in case you're wondering!

I know many of you will be clinging on to the last of the summer for dear life but autumn is on the horizon so if, like me, the idea of warming mugs of cocoa wrapped in a blanket is more appealing than the clammy summer nights then let's dive in and take a look at some of the new season 'trends' and homewares.

I've said it before but I'll say it again... just because so-called trends exist, it doesn't mean we should all immediately start redesigning our homes for the season. I'm a big believer that when decorating or styling for any season, the goal should be to bring together a curated mix of pieces that reflect you, your lifestyle and what you love - but only if you actually want to!

You should decorate your home for you regardless of what’s trending. If you love a trend or look then great, have fun with it but if not, decorate your home in a way that makes you happy and comfortable.

However, if you are interested in what's supposedly hot for the season then I've pulled together a few of the main themes below (none of which are particularly ground breaking by the way), which might give you some inspiration for your own homes.

Not much changes when it comes to Autumn décor, we all still love cosy, earthy colours inspired by nature and according to interior design experts, 2024 is no different.

Deep terracotta, rich browns, muted greens, and warm ochres are the go-to shades for homewares this coming season. Deep burgundy and red wine shades are also set to be particularly popular thanks in most part to the viral 'unexpected red' theory which I've written about here alongside a palette of muted blues.

As the temperatures start to drop, it makes sense that we reach for those extra layers in an attempt to get cosy. Combining different textures such as velvet, wool, faux fur and linen adds a layered and warm feel to any room. It's not rocket science and not a new concept by any means but it's oh so effective... this autumn 'trend' is all about creating a tactile experience so start with a neutral base and gradually layer on textures and patterns to add depth, warmth and visual interest.

This autumn, classic patterns are set to reign supreme. From the ever popular stripe to elegant florals, pattern is everywhere right now and well known traditional designs are being reimagined using new colour combinations.

Shea McGee, owner of Studio McGee is a self proclaimed fan of this particular interiors trend and let's face it, if Shea likes it, it's probably good! She says: "Embrace bold patterns and rich colours by adding wallpaper to your home. Opt for designs that evoke the warmth and cosiness of the season, such as deep jewel tones, intricate florals, or nature-inspired motifs."

Lighting takes centre stage in the darker months but we all know that the 'big light' is not conducive with a cosy and inviting atmosphere. I don't know about you but the big lights in our house may as well be purely decorative because they are NEVER switched on! Instead, try layering different types of lighting such as table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and even candle light to add warmth and depth to a space. It's so easy but so effective!
